Yarmouth is a classic New England town located in Cumberland County, Maine. Before European settlement in what is now Yarmouth, many Native American cultures are believed to have called the area home. Some time after initial European settlement, the area that originally made up of North Yarmouth, so called to distinguish it from Yarmouth, Massachusetts, was repeatedly subdivided into smaller townships. The town of Harpswell was set off in 1758, then Freeport in 1789, Pownal in 1808, Cumberland in 1821, and finally in 1849 Yarmouth became its own, distinct town.
