The fourth largest city in the state of Maine, South Portland is a city in Cumberland County with excellent resources and an active community. South Portland was incorporated as a town after it broke away from Cape Elizabeth in March of 1895. It officially became a city just three years later in March of 1898. Today this unique, coastal community is a mostly residential city with a convenient proximity to the interstate and the jetport making it an ideal location for commuters.
South Portland is home to a range of parks and open spaces perfect for enjoying outdoor recreation. The city’s Parks and Recreation department provides a range of services that lend to the active sense of community and high quality of life enjoyed by all residents. They maintain a community center, municipal pool, beach, and golf course. The Greenbelt walkway is one popular outdoor site in South Portland. This historic three-mile paved trail crosses through several neighborhoods and provides beautiful views of the harbor to runners and walkers that make use of this excellent pathway. Also in South Portland is Mill Creek Park. Located in the city’s downtown area, this beautiful park features a gorgeously landscaped pond area, bridge and rose garden. The park hosts numerous, family-friendly, local events throughout the year, including summer concerts, Art in the Park, a holiday tree lighting and winter ice skating.
For water-lovers, South Portland provides numerous ways to enjoy the coast of Maine. The city's waterfront is home to several recreational marinas for all of resident’s boating needs. South Portland also has the last free beach in the area, Willard Beach. This beach covers 4 acres and provides an area for residents to enjoy swimming, as well as commercial and recreational boating. The beach also hosts WillardFest, an annual one-day neighborhood festival with live music, local food, and plenty of community fun.
South Portland will not disappoint those who love to shop. The city is home to the Maine Mall, a fully enclosed, 1,200,000 square foot mall that is the largest shopping mall in the state of Maine and the second largest mall in all of northern New England. This mall is home to more than 140 tenants, including Best Buy, JC Penney, Macy's, and Sears. For lovers of the arts, South Portland is home to several theaters that offer musicals, plays, workshops, and classes throughout the course of the year.
South Portland is served by South Portland School Department. The city's public school system has five neighborhood elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. South Portland also offers two private schools and three institutions of higher learning, including Kaplan University, New England Bible College, and Southern Maine Community College.
