Scarborough is a small town full of natural beauty in Cumberland County on the southern coast of Maine. The town was officially incorporated in July of 1658, named for the town of Scarborough in Yorkshire, England. Today, the town is one of the fastest growing communities in the state. Scarborough is home to several, beautiful sandy beaches and a friendly community, which easily explains the influx of new residents to this wonderful location.
With its prime coastal location, Scarborough is home to numerous public areas ideal for enjoying the scenic beauty. The Scarborough Beach State Park offers some of the best swimming in New England off of the beach with lifeguard, recreational equipment rental, and food service during the summer months. The Scarborough River Wildlife Sanctuary is also in the town. The sanctuary contains 65 acres of beautifully maintained and protected land. It features trails, ponds, and abundant wildlife for the enjoyment of nature enthusiasts, students, and everyone else who loves to take in the beauty of Maine. The Scarborough Marsh is yet another excellent place to explore the natural beauty of Maine. This is the state’s largest salt marsh and can be enjoyed by foot or by canoe. The center itself provides a range of amenities, including a variety of guided and self-guided walks, canoe tours and rentals, nature exhibits and a Maine Audubon Nature Store.
For further exploration of the town’s history, the Scarborough Historical Society and Museum is open weekly to residents, guests, and visitors to the town. The Museum features extensive collections with everything from farming equipment and clothes to photography and related documents that detail the town’s history and its residents from past eras.
Also in the town of Scarborough is Higgins Beach. This small beach community is home to around 300 cottages and two inns that operate during the summer season. Higgins Beach is known for being a family-friendly and community-based place to live and vacation. The beach is unique in the area for maintaining its small-town charm, sustaining on the continued visits of families rather than large commercial tourism. This beach is an excellent and beloved place for fishing, surfing, and enjoying the beauty of nature with cherished friends and family.
Scarborough is served by Scarborough Public Schools. The town is home to Scarborough High School, Scarborough Middle School, Wentworth Intermediate School, Eight Corners Primary School, Pleasant Hill Primary School, and Blue Point Primary School. Scarborough High School is known for offering excellent academics, the school is ranked 7th within Maine and offers a range of Honors and Advanced Placement classes to its students.
